Sample Day at Sylvan Lake / Jasper Summer Hockey Camp

The Sylvan Lake/Jasper Summer Hockey Camp is a 6 day camp and we start off with registration day and a 1 hour and 15 min ice time on that day.

Then we follow the schedules for Groups A (youngest students in the session), Group B (middle aged students in the session) and C (oldest students in the session)

Day 5 is a full day plus a one hour game for the students that night and the session concludes on day 6 with a morning ice time, classroom, lunch and the final games which are 1.5 hours in length.

The final games are arranged by age and ability and are played on day 6.

Game 1 – Youngest Group A students 12:30pm – 2:00pm
Game 2 – Oldest Group A students and Youngest Group B students 2:00pm – 3:30pm

Game 3 – Oldest Group B Students and Youngest Group C students 3:30pm – 5:00pm
Game 4 – Oldest Group C Students 5:00pm – 6:30pm

The students receive their certificates after the game and that ends your session at the Sylvan Lake/Jasper Summer Hockey Camp.

Students rotate through the schedules during the week so that each group goes through each schedule.

Complete weekly schedules and information packages are mailed out by the end of June.

We have 9 one week sessions in Sylvan Lake and 2 one week sessions in Jasper. Each week we accept 108 students plus goaltenders. Our student to instructor ratio is 6:1. We take the entire list of students for each week and have it sorted from the youngest person in the camp to the oldest.

Then that list is divided into three groups as follows:.

Group A is the youngest students in that week.
Group B is the middle aged students for that week.
Group C is the oldest students for that week.

Then we take each group - Group A, Group B and Group C and divide them by age again from youngest to oldest. We then have three age groups in Groups A, B and C.

The reason that we do this is to keep the students as close to their age group as possible. We feel that students should play within their own age groups and the challenge to the student is not the other players around him/her but the challenge is to focus on the drills and become a better player. The drills are designed so each individual player can improve at their pace, so players who are new to hockey learn as much as the more skilled players learn.

When the groups take to the ice we always have a group warm-up and then we do station drills. The youngest students in the group at one station, the middle aged students for that group at another, and the oldest students in that group at the third station. Each station is 15 minutes long, so the station drills account for 45 minutes of each ice time. The goaltenders in that group receive 45 minutes of coaching from the goaltender instructors while the other students are going through their station drills. We conclude the ice sessions with full and half ice drills as a group.

Our afternoon ice sessions include a power skating session and again focus on the station drills. The goaltenders in that group again receive 45 minutes of coaching from the goaltender instructors.

We do try to keep friends or small groups together if there is a special request made but there are no guarantees of that happening especially if the age difference is too much for that particular week. We do, however, try our best and the majority of the time we are able to accommodate everyone.

We have different 3 groups, so there are three different schedules. The students rotate through them during the week. All students are mailed schedules and information packages in June or early July, depending on when they attend our sessions.
